UNIT ONE: MAPPING AND THE THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

MYP 1 has been investigating the world through maps and atlases. They began their mapping unit by exploring how to locate different places on a map using coordinates and relative location. We've also been discussing the "Five Themes of Geography" which help geographers young and old understand the world according to concepts like location (Where is it?), place (What are its characteristics?), region (Does it share characteristics with other places?), movement (What sorts of goods, ideas and people move in and out?) and human-environment interaction (How does the environment change us and how do we change the environment?). We've also started a cultural exchange project with a group of sixth graders from New Jersey. There is a link in the navigation window labelled "WIS-BTMS Cultural Exchange" that will take you to the wiki we've created for this project.




UNIT PROJECT

The newspaper WWW is doing a special feature on seven of the most desired places to visit in the world. The newspaper's public relations quarter has printed an ad in the newspaper seeking all geographers who have experience with the five themes of geography. Word has gotten out that the grade six students at WIS are well practiced in all five areas. WWW has requested their assistance in their upcoming feature article. Guidelines and rubric are below:

ancient_greece_6.jpgGrade 6 just completed their country reports, finishing off their unit on world geography and mapping skills. This week we began our study of ancient Greece, with the boys preparing a presentation on Sparta and the girls one on Athens. Using the five themes of geography that they learned during the last unit, the students will take turns next week educating the rest of the class on their assigned city-state.
